A 71-year-old is dead from a gunshot wound to the head and a 41-year-old woman has been charged with her murder after police were called to a residence in Hope Vale.
After a 5 hour standoff starting at 11:30am, the lady surrendered to Cooktown police.
The body of her mother was found inside the home. She had died from a single gunshot to the head.
Scientific and forensic officers are examining the area after it was declared a crime scene. A firearm was removed to be examined by specialists.
The alleged killer is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow.
